Lazenby wins Lee County Spelling Bee

 

For the third year in a row, Kevin Lazenby, an 8th grader at Opelika Middle School, won the Lee County Spelling Bee.  The bee was hosted by Smiths Station Jr. High.  Lazenby will advance to the state spelling bee which will be held in Birmingham on March 10.  Last year, Lazenby won the state spelling bee and advanced to the Scripps National Spelling Bee.  Congratulations Kevin and best of luck in the state bee!

Banner Unveiled to Honor OMS Soccer Team

 

The 2011 Opelika Middle School soccer team was honored at a recent OMS basketball game for recording the best record in school history (11-3). A banner was unveiled at halftime of the OMS vs. South Girard game.

OMS wins Battle of the Books

 

The Newbery Newbies from Opelika Middle School recently won the Battle of the Books held at OMS. The quiz bowl style competition between OMS and Drake Middle School is an annual event and a traveling trophy is awarded to the winning team.

Northside School wins Telephone Book Recycling Drive

 

Congratulations to Northside Intermediate School for recycling the most telephone books in the 2011 phone book recycling drive, Project Redirectory. The students at Northside recycled a total of 3581 books with Mrs. Cook's 5th grade class recycling the most books. In an assembly on January 27, principal Mike McKee was presented with a check for the school by AT&T representative Jody Washington. Ms. Washington also presented checks to 2nd place winner, Morris Avenue Intermediate School (2803 books) and 3rd place winner, Jeter Primary School (2101 books). The total number of books recycled by the Opelika City Schools was 12,481. Project Redirectory is sponsored annually by AT&T, The Opelika City Schools, Keep Opelika Beautiful and The City of Opelika Solid Waste Division.
