The Opelika Bulldogs

The Opelika Bulldogs defeated the Parker Thundering Herd, of Birmingham, 50-34 in the last regular season game at Bulldog Stadium. The Bulldogs recognized 29 senior football players along with senior band members and cheerleaders before the game. All 29 seniors played along with one senior manager, Devonte Ross. Ross has been a manager for 4 years and always wanted to play football. Coach Brian Blackmon and his staff got together a month ago to start the paper work to allow Devonte to play and be eligible with the AHSAA.

January 2012

Dear Parents / Guardians of Eighth Grade Students:

In a few short months, your child will be a freshman at Opelika High School. It is an exciting time, and the role you play is very important. In preparation for the 2012-13 school year, we will conduct a series of overview presentations to help explain the process of students progressing toward graduation in 2016.

To help you and your child understand the state requirements for graduation, the course selection and scheduling process, Dr. Seymore, the principal of Opelika High School, along with one of the counselors will conduct several meetings. The meetings are scheduled for your convenience:

Thursday, January 26        11:00   Opelika Housing Management Office, 1202 Samford Way

The pre-registration meeting for students will be Wednesday, February 1 at 8:30 in the auditorium at Opelika Middle School. Each student will receive a Curriculum Guide explaining the course and diploma options in detail.

Students will complete their course selection sheet the week of February 22, 2012. OHS and OMS counselors will assist students as students make their selections. It is important that parents and students review the curriculum guide carefully prior to this time to make the best choices and course selections based on the student’s unique abilities and interests.

Updated Attendance Guidelines

Effective with the 2011-12 academic year, the Opelika City Schools attendance guidelines have been modified to include a change regarding the number of parental excuses accepted per school year.

Parental Excuses

A maximum of (10) days will be excused with parental notes per school year; after which, a doctor/court excuse is required in order for an absence to be excused. In the event the absentee limit has been reached, it is the responsibility of the student and his/her parent to provide documentation and request a conference with the principal regarding the excessive absenteeism. The principal may make exceptions in cases of extended illnesses, accidents, hospital confinement, principal directed absences, or other prearranged cases as justified in writing or by parent conference. In the event a request is made to have an absence prearranged, the principal will consider the student's academic performance and attendance record. Please note: Suspension, expulsion, and truancy will be considered an unexcused absence, and the student may receive a zero for work missed.

OCS ATTENDANCE POLICY (from the OCS Code of Student Conduct) Regular attendance is essential for good schoolwork. When returning to school following an absence, a student must present a statement from parent/guardian explaining the absence to the appropriate school official. This should be done on the date the student returns and must be done by the third day to make up the work missed, (failure to bring a note by the third day will result in a zero for the work missed unless extenuating circumstances prevent this.) Suspension, expulsion, and truancy will be considered an unexcused absence, and the student will receive a zero for all work missed. Reference: Policy # J-2.
